There are 3 types of universities in Nigeria, namely:

  1. Federal universities
  2. State universities
  3. Private universities

It is wise you’ve detailed information on the universities in Nigeria. Information such as if the university is approved by the NUC or not and if the courses you want to study is accredited or not.

Remember a university may be approved by NUC but the courses not approved or accredited, therefore it is your right to know.

According to the NUC list of approved universities in Nigeria, there are:

  • 40 Federal universities in Nigeria
  • 44 State universities in Nigeria
  • 74 private universities in Nigeria

This gives a total of 158 universities scattered about the country. The NUC has reiterated over and over again the importance of gaining knowledge about any of these universities before applying. This is necessary to avoid regret at the end of the day if the courses chosen have not been accredited.

If you’ve been wondering what the NUC is, NUC is an acronym for Nigerian Universities Commission. It is the body saddled with the responsibility of regulating the affairs of universities in Nigeria. It has a mandate of ensuring innovation and quality delivery by existing universities and newly established ones.

You definitely would’ve met one or two people who have faced the embarrassment of reapplying to other universities after studying in previous ones for some years. This happens when the NUC shuts down the university or some of the departments in it. I am sure you would not want to face such embarrassment. These are federal owned universities. Federal government funds the universities, hence making them the most affordable universities in Nigeria. Also the admission criteria and tuition is equal for all Nigerians.
