Just 3 years after the first weekly or Sunday publication, the company started daily publication, which they have sustained till date. They gained wide acceptance because they dived into broad issues that interest almost everybody in Nigeria. Though, as time went on the two friends parted ways due to conflict of interest.
The freedom of press has been a major issue of concern in Africa. In fact, till today our press cannot boldly claim to be free. The punch newspaper has equally been suffering from the hardened maltreatment from some rulers in Nigeria.
For instance, in the year 1990 its editor was jailed for 54 days by the then head of state. Also, in the year 1993 and 1994 the publishing house was closed by the then ruler.
